Altars are built for the spirits of loved ones, to guide them back to the family. They are filled with items that represent the person being honored, including favorite food and drink, decorations, pan de muerto a traditional Mexican bread, candles, papel picado, possessions and more.

Traditional altar elements include:

  • Table with colorful tablecloth
  • A backdrop (usually an arch representing the transition to the afterlife)
  • Photos of ancestors, loved ones,
  • Candles
  • Incense
  • Food (Fruit and traditional Mexican pastries are the most popular)
  • Flowers (fresh or plastic)
  • Sugar Skulls (difficult to find outside of diverse cities, but here is a link to make your own!)
